Maui Torch relay to mark Tibetan Olympics

With expatriate Tibetans barred from participating in the 2008 Olympic Games being held in China, a Tibetan Olympics being held in India in May is being marked with a Torch Relay that includes Maui this weekend.

A running of the Torch Relay for the Tibetan Olympics will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday from the Maui Dharma Center at 81 Baldwin Ave. The event will involve a march to Baldwin Beach Park, with Lama Gyaltsen to offer a prayer for world peace.

The relay began Jan. 30 in Delhi and will continue around the world to open the Tibetan Olympics May 15-25 in Dharamsala, India, home of the Tibetan government in exile.

Tibetans who have fled their homeland will hold their own Olympic events in Dharamsala. For more information, go to www.tibetanolympics.com or call members of the Maui Dharma Center at 280-2009, 280-5985 or 463-0493.
