Tibetan exiles compete in alternative 'Olympic Games'
DHARAMSHALA, India, 25 May 2008 (The Independent) — An alternative "Olympic Games", organised by Tibetan exiles in India, has begun here. The aim is to draw international attention to the situation in Tibet, which is under Chinese rule, just three months ahead of this summer's official Games in Beijing. The event was launched last week beneath grey skies in the peaceful Himalayan village of McLeod Ganj, or Upper Dharamshala, home of the Dalai Lama and Tibet's government-in-exile. Twenty-three Tibetan athletes have gathered to compete in four days of archery, running, swimming, track and field events. Dressed in bold red and white tracksuits emblazoned with the familiar interlocking rings of the Olympic logo and the slogan, "One world, many dreams", the Tibetan competitors are none of them professional athletes — but all are passionate about the spirit behind the games. ... -

Exiled Tibetans try to upstage China with their own 'Olympics'
DHARAMSHALA, India, 24 May 2008 (ANI) — A small group of exiled Tibetans have been holding their own 'Olympics' in India, with the intention of mocking the holding of Olympics in Beijing, China in August this year. The four-day games being held near Dharamsala have been organised to highlight the Tibetan campaign for an independent homeland. ... -
Tibetans try to upstage China with own Olympics
DHARAMSHALA, India, 22 May 2008 (Reuters) — A handful of exiled Tibetans in India began competing on Thursday in what they said were the "Tibetan Olympics", an event high on symbolism meant to mock China, the host of the real Summer Games in August. On a lush ground at the foothills of the Himalayas, 13 men and 10 women in white and red track suits emblazoned with the five intertwined rings Olympics logo shot arrows and fired from air guns, marking the opening of the four-day games. ... -
Tibetan 'Olympics' kicks off in India
DHARAMSHALA, India, 21 May 2008 (AFP) — A mock "Olympics" organised by Tibetan exiles kicked off in northern India on Thursday despite calls to halt anti-China protests as a mark of respect for earthquake victims. The alternative games, which have just 23 participants, comes less than three months before the Beijing Games and will feature sports such as swimming, archery and shooting. ... -
Tibetan exiles to kick off mock Olympics in India
DHARAMSHALA, India, 21 May 2008 (AFP) — Radical Tibetan exiles are to kick off their rival 'Olympics' in northern India on Thursday, less than three months ahead of the real event to be held in Beijing. The event will feature just a handful of sports such as swimming, archery and shooting — but is causing embarrassment for unwilling host nation India and frustration for the more moderate exiled Tibetan administration led by the Dalai Lama. ... -
