LONDON, UK, 20 April 2008 — The London leg of the Tibetan Olympics torch relay will pass through the Chinese Embassy and Westminster Bridge. The relay is a prelude to the Tibetan Olympics 2008, which will be held from 15 to 25 May in Dharamshala, India.
The torch, which is on an around-the-world tour, arrived in London from Rio de Janeiro. It was first lit in Delhi on 30 January on Gandhi's death anniversary. It then travelled to Sydney, Taipei, Dharamshala, Tokyo, Maui, San Francisco and New York City. Cape Town will be the next destination after London, followed by Tel Aviv. It will reach back in Dharamshala in mid-May for the grand opening of the Tibetan Olympics.
Since Tibetans cannot participate in the Beijing Olympics, the Tibetan Olympics 2008 is an initiative that will allow Tibetans to celebrate the spirit of the global sporting event. It is also an avenue for those promising and talented Tibetan athletes who are deprived of participating in the Beijing games.
The Tibetan Olympics is not meant to oppose the Beijing Olympics. Instead, the Tibetan Olympics will complement the games in the Chinese capital with a Tibetan goodwill message.
